On Wednesday, March 1, 2000,
STS Consultants, Ltd. (STS), received a Concrete Design Award
from the Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association (WRMCA) for
the work completed at the Georgia-Pacific (G-P) Port Edwards
Dam.
This dam, which is located
on the Wisconsin River in central Wisconsin, was scheduled for
repairs in 1999. STS was originally contracted for a basic field
service inspection of the concrete and reinforcing steel and
to assemble a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Construction
Quality Inspection Program. As the project progressed, STS's
role expanded significantly. An investigation of the subsurface
conditions of the structure and the completion of a new design
to accommodate working under unforeseen conditions were also
needed. Construction needed to be completed by November 1, 1999,
to meet the deadline set by FERC and to insure that construction
was completed before winter arrived.
The new design included re-engineered
footing and foundation wall designs, additional structural supports
to carry the 12" thick concrete cap slab, and new design
features to tie-in the new construction to the existing structures.
Wisconsin Valley Concrete
of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, the concrete supplier for this project,
nominated STS and this project for this prestigious award because
of STS's unique solution to underwater construction.
These awards are presented
for projects that involve "a beautiful concept, a solid
design, talented workers, and an outstanding product all blending
together to create something memorable." The awards were
presented at a dinner at the Park Plaza Paper Valley Hotel in
Appleton.
